Will ‘So I’m a Spider, So What?’ have a season 2?

A girl reincarnated as a spider? It's more likely than you think.

So I’m a Spider, So What? is a 2021 anime series adapted from Okina Baba’s light novel of the same name. The anime’s first season was aired from January to July of that year, and to folks’ surprise, it was better received than some pessimists imagined it would. No, it didn’t become the best anime of 2021, but it was warmly embraced by fans. In all honestly, given this series’ unique premise, its success really shouldn’t be so shocking.

So I’m a Spider, So What? introduces us to a teenage girl who finds herself in a new fantasy world after a mysterious spell is cast. To make matters worse, she reincarnates as a spider, of all animals. (Good thing she’s not an arachnophobe, or things could gone south very quickly.) Now, she must rely on her instincts to survive, which is no easy task. As one can only imagine, getting used to a foreign body is already a struggle, but for that new body to be that of a spider is a whole other level of trouble.

I know, the premise seems a bit silly. A lot of anime series do. However, as you can probably tell, there’s more to So I’m a Spider, So What? than its strange setup. This story has a touch of mystery to it, and can actually be quite dark at times, mixing raw survival scenes with great comedic relief. All in all, it’s an anime for all tastes, so it stands to reason that fans are craving more.

Will So I’m a Spider, So What? have a season 2?

It’s been over two years since the first season concluded its 24-episode run, and as of right now, So I’m a Spider, So What? has not yet been renewed for a second season. This may spell trouble for the series, but its future isn’t set in stone just yet.

Anime shows generally take longer breaks between seasons than live-action TV shows, as working on animation is a slow process by nature. On top of that, sometimes studios just don’t expect an anime’s popularity, and so they don’t plan ahead for future seasons. This means that if a second season isn’t planned from the get-go, fans are likely to be left hanging for a while. This can happen to even the most popular anime series, sometimes with gaps of three or four years between seasons.

Considering this, as well as season 1’s success, fans can remain hopeful for a second season. There’s no guarantee that it will ever come, but hope should always be the last thing to die. While you wait for news, how about rewatching season 1 or diving into the source material? It should help fill in that spider-shaped hole in your heart.
