Back in September, we reported that DC and Vertigo comics character Lucifer had been granted a pilot commitment at Fox. Now, the studio has followed through on that commitment and given the series a pilot order.

While still not a guarantee that Lucifer will survive pilot season, this is a great step forward for fans of the character, who was created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg. Spearheaded by Californication creator Tom Kapinos, the series will center on the titular devil who, “bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom,” and opts instead to open an exclusive piano bar in Los Angeles.

Mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now come on board the series, along with CSI and The Amazing Race producer Jonathan Littman. Sleepy Hollow‘s Len Wiseman will co-produce as well, and will step behind the camera to direct the pilot episode.

Lucifer is just one of several DC Comics shows in development; Supergirl is currently taking shape at CBS, there’s a strong possibility that Brandon Routh will get his own Arrow spin-off as The Atom, and Preacher (another comic from DC’s Vertigo imprint) is in the works for AMC. It’s also one of several comic book-based TV shows in Fox’s pipeline. Gotham has been renewed for a second season, and a live-action X-Men series was recently announced.

We’ll have more news about the Lucifer pilot as it heads into production in the coming months, but for now, share your thoughts on the project in the comments section below.
