As we approach D-Day for Captain America Civil War – and indeed the MCU in general – Joe and Anthony Russo’s action threequel has been likened to a suspense thriller, described as Marvel’s best yet, and could well feature a controversial ending.
Now, the directors themselves have weighed in on Civil War and how it sits with the rest of the Captain America sub-franchise.
[zerg]Whereas The First Avenger channelled the patriotic propaganda of the time and The Winter Solider echoed those pulse-pounding spy thrillers of the 80s, the latest outing of Chris Evan’s star-spangled hero – who very much remains the focus of the film – is much more aggressive in tone than those that came before.
We really did a radical reinterpretation of Captain America in Winter Soldier. We were twice as aggressive in tone and execution on Civil War.
Naturally, the aggression will come to the fore during the almighty brawl between Team Iron Man and Team Cap. It’s shaping up to be a much more nuanced affair, with the likes of Chadwick Boseman claiming that Black Panther has a more complex role in Civil War beyond simply picking a camp to fall down in.
But one of the chief reasons that the superhero roster are divided in the first place is Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes (AKA The Winter Soldier), and it’s Rogers’ allegiance to his old friend that only adds fuel to the fire.
Said the Russo Brothers: “The relationship between him and Captain America will be further fleshed out.” Hardly revelatory, but we’re excited to see how Cap and Bucky’s relationship has evolved, and how it plays when they’re fighting out of the same corner.
Captain America: Civil War turns Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against one another when the film opens on May 6.
