Dark and difficult times lie ahead for the Shelby clan.

Per Deadline, filming is now underway on the fourth season of brooding gangster series Peaky Blinders, and Adrien Brody has climbed aboard in the nick of time. News of Brody’s casting comes hand-in-hand with the first story details for season 4, which reveal that the Blinders are at risk of total annihilation. Things don’t look too good for the Birmingham mobsters, then, and though details of Adrien Brody’s character are being kept stowed away for the time being, series creator Steven Knight (Taboo) is confident the Oscar-winner will thrive in the seedy underworld of Small Heath.

Said he: “He genuinely was the actor in my head when I wrote the part. I’m sure he will be a formidable presence in the world of the Peaky Blinders.”

Other cast members on board for Peaky Blinders season 4 include Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, who reprise as Thomas Shelby and the bat-shit insane Alfie Solomons, respectively. Deadline goes on to reveal that this new batch of episodes opens on Christmas Eve, at a time when Tommy receives a mysterious letter only to realize that “the Peaky Blinders are in danger of annihilation. As the enemy closes in, he flees his country house and returns to the streets of Small Heath, Birmingham where a desperate fight for survival begins.” Is Adrien Brody’s newcomer pulling the string behind this newfound threat? It certainly appears so.

There are plenty of exciting supporting players attached to this new season, too, including Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Joe Cole, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kate Phillips, along with series regulars, Natasha O’Keefe and Packy Lee.

Filming is now underway on the set of Peaky Blinders, and with Brody on board for the show’s fourth season, all signs point to a premiere in early 2018.
