Forget ‘Seinfeld’ AI is now generating anime on Twitch

If you think 'One Piece' is long, wait until you see this new, AI-generated anime.

It seems that it isn’t only Jerry Seinfeld and sitcom writers who need to worry about their jobs being stolen by AI, as a new Twitch channel is creating a never-ending anime using AI generation.

In January, a Twitch channel called watchmeforever made headlines with its Nothing, Forever stream, which used AI generation to create a constant flow of new Seinfeld episodes. The stream’s mixture of surreal humor and random occurrences captured the internet’s imagination, and it quickly went viral. The stream’s fame only grew more intense when the channel was taken down after the AI-generated an offensive joke

Now, a channel alwaysbreaktime is doing the same, but rather than 90s sitcoms about nothing, it is parodying anime with a show titled Disastrously Not Knowing What to Do and What Not to Do. Created by Vaarinia and tsukiyakii and built on OpenAI’s GPT-3, the alwaysbreaktime channel description perfectly lays out the channel’s aim, saying:

Longer than One Piece will ever be.

No more waiting for weekly episode drops or the end-of-season binge.

New content every second for the rest of your life.

The future of anime is here.

The generated anime follows three characters, Vaarinia, Tsuki, and Yakii, three students who embark on various school-based adventures. However, due to the nature of AI generation, these adventures are frequently nonsensical, giving them a surreal vibe. Since the channel launched on Feb 8, it has quickly grown in popularity, reaching 200 Twitch followers in just over a week, and at the time of writing, it sits at a massive 2.6k followers.

It seems the trend of AI-generated media shows no signs of slowing down, as several other channels are using AI to make content, often parodying popular internet memes and other beloved shows, cartoons, and movies.
