The trend for bypassing theatrical releases and going straight to PVOD has now extended to horror movie Antebellum. The Lionsgate picture was originally scheduled to arrive in cinemas in April, before being pushed back to August. However, the studio have now decided to put the flick online this September 18th, while only releasing the film theatrically in select international markets.
We have quite a long while to go until new episodes of Supergirl, with season 6 of The CW show due to arrive in 2021. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, season 5 of the series was cut short to nineteen episodes, meaning that many of the season's intended plot lines were truncated. Furthermore, while most Arrowverse shows will be back in January, Melissa Benoist's pregnancy means that the series will return in the spring or summer. Despite this gap, though, The CW have just put out a teaser poster featuring Nicole Maines' Dreamer.
Amazon have announced today that they've decided to move forward with a second season of Hunters. The series focuses on a group of Nazi hunters in 1977 New York City who uncover a plot by Nazi war criminals to begin a new movement in the U.S., while also discovering information about the post-war recruitment of Nazi scientists to the American cause. Al Pacino leads a strong cast for the series that also includes Logan Lerman, Saul Rubinek and Josh Radnor.
The future of the Hellraiser franchise is currently in a transitional space: on the one hand, a reboot movie and HBO series are planned, but on the other, Clive Barker is now aiming to get back the rights to the source material behind the original film. While this may not happen before a new Hellraiser, it does seem that Barker's legal case could affect whether we'll get new approaches to the Cenobites in the reboot.
Netflix have added a lot of new content for August already, whilst continuing to draw big audiences for returning original series like The Umbrella Academy and divisive but popular movie The Kissing Booth 2. For the week of August 3rd to August 9th, the streaming platform are releasing even more, with Guillermo del Toro's Wizards: Tales of Arcadia on the way, as well as timely documentary Immigration Nation and many other titles in what's looking to be another busy week for the company.
Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this COVID-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
With The Umbrella Academy returning for a second season this Friday, superhero shows remain a solid investment for Netflix. Whether licensed or original, the US version of Netflix currently has 61 superhero-themed series available to stream, including multiple shows from the Arrowverse, the Netflix MCU originals and quite a ridiculous amount of Power Rangers content. What are some of the highlights, then, of Netflix's superpowered series?
Although we now have to wait an extra year for Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, another consequence of COVID-19, fans of the franchise can at least look forward to John Carpenter's original movie and some of its sequels coming to the drive-in. With the drive-in providing one of the rare venues for watching films while social distancing, Halloween and sequels Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers are now coming to participating outdoor theaters.
The first season of Sweet Magnolias was a hit for Netflix this year, maintaining its position in the top 10 of the platform's content for some time after being added in May. Fans of the Southern-set series will be pleased to learn, then, that Netflix have already confirmed a second season of the show, which currently doesn't yet have a release date, something likely due to the production issues faced by the industry.
