Sony has announced Underworld: Awakening, the fourth entry in the vampire series, for Blu-Ray in May. Awakening marks the return of the series star Kate Beckinsale after sitting out for the prequel. The Blu-Ray will be presented in both 2D and 3D.

Having only seen bits and pieces of the first two Underworld films and the entire third prequel film, I actually really enjoyed Awakening. I was surprised by how fun and violent it was. Sure, the story wasn’t all that original and the acting outside of Beckinsale was laughable, but it was an entertaining popcorn flick. Plus, the 3D was impressive and used in a way to only further the enjoyment.

Our very own Christian Law had this to say about the film in his review.

So as stylish and flashy as the action is this time around, I can still only recommend Underworld: Awakening to diehard fans of the series. The story is slowly getting more and more ridiculous, and I’m afraid that we’ll see Underworld get run into the ground soon. But until that happens, fans are left with a pretty good addition to the canon, as the amount of pulse-pounding action set pieces are more than enough to make up for the lacking story and boring 3D.

Sony hasn’t announced any technical specs, but we do know the film will be coming in 2D and 3D combo packs, plus a series set has been announced for release on the same day.

Underworld: Awakening will hit shelves on May 8th, 2012.

I'm an avid watcher of films and I just love discussing and sharing them with the world. I enjoy horror, sci-fi and mostly any genre under the sun, plus I have a slight obsession with Blu-ray's and the whole high definition craze.
