Zack Snyder spent the weekend hanging out with his fans at his Fill Circle event, a three-day convention that celebrated the director’s contributions to the now defunct DC universe. The panels saw more than a few Snyder what-if plans and the reveals have some fans thanking the comic book gods for taking the director as far away from the future of DC as possible. The little things really do add up to a lot, and when you look at those infractions together, they start to paint a very strange picture of what Snyder thought of the DC universe.
The newest details of Snyder’s now defunct DCEU compared to James Gunn’s recent Creature Commando revelations have us breathing that sigh of relief as well, as we celebrate all the latest information the miniseries just dropped.
Things don’t have to be gritty to be good
In the last few weeks, we’ve gotten multiple morsels of information about Zack Snyder’s former plans for the future of his extended DC universe. The talented director can be credited with tapping some of the franchise’s best actors, directing some stunning movies, and making the first pushes to connect the universe, but it’s starting to become incredibly clear that he was going for something edgy rather than cohesive.
This less-than-comic-accurate re-envisioning of classic characters could be glimpsed in small pieces throughout his limited DC offerings from the incredibly awkward, shoehorned team up between Joker and Batman at the end of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the leaked plot revolving around Lois Lane shacking up with Batman though she was too depressed to go to work, and even the absolutely ludicrous (and infamous) Marth solution to Batman V Superman. But there is one recently leaked idea that really takes the cake.
In another massive revision of comic book lore, Snyder intended to connect the Amazonian gods Zeus and Ares to the Kryptonians. His proposed plan would admittedly connect some loose ends of the universe together, but the change would have ignored the long legacy of the Old Gods in DC comics. We’re not saying things can’t be changed, but a decision that sounds like it came from a dream journal was definitely not the answer. We’ll just put that one down next to Mera-has-a-British-accent on the list of terrible ideas.
Is Snyder really out of the DCU?
Despite his controversial changes to the original plotlines of popular comics, Snyder still has a diehard set of fans, who to this day still debate whether or not the director is done with DC. His Full Circle event (a three-day celebration of his DC trilogy) had some Snyder Bros positive the director was announcing his triumphant return to the DCU, but as of Sunday their hopes have been somewhat dashed. Fans were overjoyed when Ben Affleck took the stage before Justice League played, and many took that as a sign that he and Snyder had big plans for The Dark Knight in the future. Viewers pointed to Affleck and Snyder’s relative silence on certain topics as well as an absence of anything Robin to mean that the duo was ready to go through with their secret plans for the character. The event closed out with nary a whisper of Snyder’s return to work under James Gunn, so whatever Snyder’s plans, they probably wont be with Gunn.
James Gunn’s universe is going to kick Snyder’s universe’s butt
As Snyder’s DC chapter comes to a close, we can only hope his loyal followers will still find it in their hearts to feel the hype for DC’s upcoming projects. One of the series coming soon is the under-the-radar animated show, Creature Commandos the 7 episode miniseries hits right on Gunn’s favorite superhero group: the one you’ve never heard of. The series has an all-star cast including Alan Tudyk and David Harbour and follows Cryptid Creature Heroes as they fight Nazis. The Creature Commando team has been featured in Batman the Brave and the Bold animated series so there is always a chance that the miniseries sets up for some kind of cross over when James Gunn’s The Brave and Bold eventually hits theatres.
