It may not seem like it, but it turns out that Margot Robbie is a gamer. On the promotional circuit for Barbie (before the SAG-AFTRA strike), the actress shared one title that she played recently. However, her game of choice might not be exactly what you want to hear, because to its connections to a person of some significant controversy.
During an interview with Maude Garrett, Robbie talked about her deep interest in the Harry Potter franchise. She revealed that she was a Gryffindor, listened to the audiobooks narrated by Stephen Fry every night, and had also played Hogwarts Legacy. The point was quickly glossed over while the subject remained on audiobooks, so actress wasn’t able to offer much more detail about her gameplay habits, or whether or not she was enjoying her time with it.
While some fans praised the actress for being “one of them” and being somewhat more relatable, others were upset when they learned that the actress had played the recent Harry Potter game, especially since it lines J.K. Rowling’s pockets. Then again, so does most of the other Wizarding World media she consumes.
Hogwarts Legacy faced controversy well before its release as a result of Rowling’s troubling commentary on the transgender community. There were calls to boycott the game, but it ultimately became the most-played title on Steam after it broke the record for the most concurrent players. Rowling has made several comments about the criticism made against her, stating that there were fans who were grateful for her opinion and that she doesn’t care about her legacy.
Fortunately for Robbie, there wasn’t a significant amount of backlash on social media after her admission to being a passionate Harry Potter fan. Most people celebrated that she was a diehard fan, all the while agreeing that Fry’s audiobooks were much superior to Jim Dale’s.
The actress has opened up about her interest in the Harry Potter franchise from time to time. Back in 2020, ET Canada reported that Robbie’s husband, Tom Ackerley, was an extra in the films. She also shared that she wanted glasses just so she could look like the boy who lived.
More recently, Warner Bros Discovery revealed plans to create a Harry Potter series for Max. Considering the amount of work Robbie has done for the studio through DC and Barbie, there may be a chance that the studio will consider her for a role.
For now, you will be able to see Margot Robbie in Barbie once it hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
