With Tokyo Game Show 2012 now in full swing the most time honored game journalist ritual (tracking down Sony employees at video game expos, and forcing them to confirm that The Last Guardian is still in development) has also taken place.

A Japanese Sony developer, who wished to remain anonymous, told Kotaku that Team Ico’s long-overdue game is still very much alive, despite the fact that the company has nothing to show at TGS.

“We are working on it… There are lots of pieces to the puzzle. It’s a matter of getting them to fit together.”

The developer added that The Last Guardian is still being developed in Japan, and Fumito Ueda continues to work closely on the game as a consultant, despite leaving the company late last year.

With all signs pointing towards the next PlayStation being release as early as next year, the window of opportunity for The Last Guardian to be released this console generation seems to be closing.

There is nothing I would like better than to see this title get released on the PS3, but I just can’t see that happening since Team Ico is still having to redo core engineering work on The Last Guardian after six years of development.
