Placing players in control of young kid, the dev has made clear its ambition to tell its story of hardship and sacrifice through the innocent lens of children. Caught up in a war they don’t truly understand, it’s a platform that has the potential for a great storytelling device, and 11 bit studios outlined some of the ambition behind The Little Ones.

“This War of Mine: The Little Ones focuses on the reality of enduring war and the idea that even in war, kids are still kids – they laugh, cry, play with toys and see the world differently,” the publisher explained. “In addition to thinking about survival, you’ll have to bring back the kid in yourself to understand how to protect the little ones.”

You’ll be pleased to note that the studio’s expanded version of the game won’t limit you to controlling just children; rather, you’ll also be tasked with managing a finite amount of resources as you hunker down in a besieged city. For PlayStation 4 owners, it’s understood that there will be an exclusive shelter known as the “Large Mansion.”

Expect moral conundrums aplenty when This War of Mine: The Little Ones hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 29, 2016.
