8 Awesome Moments From The Second Power Rangers Trailer

This year, its classic 90s TV show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' turn to get rebooted for the big screen in the much-anticipated Power Rangers from Lionsgate. The first trailer, released late last year, caused a stir online as it presented a movie far removed from the cheese of the original show. It seemed to promise a more down-to-earth take on the franchise that was an unlikely blend of The Breakfast Club and Chronicle. While it impressed many, some felt it could follow in the footsteps as 2015's Fantastic Four as another misguided gritty reboot of a family-friendly property. Thankfully, this second trailer puts those fears to bed by ramping up the humour, the action and the loving nods to the original show. By the looks of things, the movie will be a very different beast from the kitschy cult kids show we all grew up with, but it'll still remember not to take itself too seriously, which should help Power Rangers appeal to both hardcore fans and newcomers alike. So, as we wait for the reboot to hit theaters, join us we take a look back at the new trailer and pick out the 8 most exciting moments from it! 8) The Humour As we said above, the first trailer got many worried that Power Rangers would take an unnecessary self-serious approach to a, let's face it, very silly franchise. Thankfully, this second trailer makes it clear from the off that there will be a lot of levity and brightness to the movie. While the last preview focused on how these five teenagers were all loners with attitude problems, this one quickly teams them together as unlikely friends. "We're all screw-ups," says Naomi Scott's Kimberly, presumably meant in a team-bonding way. The humour comes out in the scene where their power coins give them their own unique coloured glow and Zack (Ludi Lun) shares a bit of banter with Billy (RJ Cyler). It's an exchange that will probably be funnier in the context of the movie, but it still does a good job of showing how the Rangers quickly become a tight-knit group. A much broader moment happens when Becky Gomez' Trini goes home and is honest about her day; telling her family that she discovered a spaceship and became a superhero. "Pee in this cup!" orders someone who is presumably her mom. 7) Zordon Revealed Fans have been excited to see Bryan Cranston as the Rangers' disembodied mentor Zordon since it was announced that he was playing the iconic character a few months back. Apart from a blurry image from a phone leaked out the other week though, this trailer provides our first real look at him in action. What fans will no doubt notice right away is the core visual concept of the character has been changed. Rather than suspended in a tube, Cranston's Zordon takes the form of a face that appears from out of the wall of the Command Centre (or whatever the Ranger's base will be known as in the movie). We still don't know much about the nature of Zordon in the film, but his form here brings to mind a sort of space-age A.I. interface. It's a pretty major change to the character, then, though he is still recognizably the big white bald head that fans know and love. Except this time he sounds like Walter White. New Zordon is clearly a slightly tougher mentor than the old one as well, as he trains his soldiers hard. e.g. conjuring up some hologram rock-monsters for them to beat up (or get beaten up by, as the case may be). 6) Ai-Yi-Yi, It's Alpha Zordon's trusty diminutive robot assistant Alpha also makes his debut here - and he seems to have undergone a bigger change than his master, particularly in the personality department. In the old series, Alpha was a helium-voiced, ever-hysterical source of comic relief who was known for his catchphrase of "ai-yi-yi." He was also totally loyal to the Rangers, seeing as he recruited them himself (upon Zordon's instructions). Though he's also been significantly redesigned from the original, the thing that's most noticeable about the new Alpha is that he's much more dismissive of the Rangers than he used to be. With a more nasally voice courtesy of Bill Hader, he complains "I was kinda expecting a little more" when he meets them. A shamelessly rude robot worked well with Alan Tudyk's K2SO in Rogue One, so the new Alpha could likewise steal the show in this movie. 5) A Legion Of Warriors One of the more intriguing elements bubbling through the two trailers released so far is the teasing of a wider exploration of the mythology of the Power Rangers than what we got in the TV series. In the previous trailer, Rita Repulsa stated that she had "killed Rangers before" - hinting at a past tussle with a previous generation of heroes. In this one, Zordon's voiceover provides lots of interesting phrases that hint at a bigger meaning. "The Power Rangers were a legion of warriors," he tells the teens. "You must become those warriors." The use of the word 'legion' suggests there didn't use to only be five of them - perhaps they were like DC's Green Lantern Corps, and the Rangers were a kind of universal police force? Towards the end of the trailer, Zordon tells his proteges: "This is your destiny. This is your time." Couple this with Jason's earlier amazement that they were all in the same place when Billy found the Power Coins and it looks like there will be an element of the Chosen Ones to these Rangers, which is another way in which it diverges from the show. 4) Rita Repulsa Is Pure Evil Elizabeth Banks hasn't had too much to do in these trailers, but we do get a little more of her in action as supervillainess Rita Repulsa in this one. And form the looks of it, she's being set up as one mean woman. The original Rita quickly became more of a bumbling antagonist in the show, so the trailers are doing a lot of hard work in making Banks' version seem like a credible threat. "I will destroy everything," Rita purrs, along to clips of her attacking Trini in her bedroom or terrorizing Angel Grove with her army. As if that didn't drive the point home, Zordon reminds us: "She is pure evil." Tying into what we just said about the wider mythology, it seems that - just like in the show - Zordon and Rita are old enemies. Zordon's hatred of her is probably to do with the fact that she killed some of his Rangers in previous battles. Likewise, in one scene we see Rita in a black outfit, without her distinctive green armour. This suggests the common theory that she gains the Dragon Power Coin - usually belonging to the Green Ranger - at some point in the movie and uses its power herself. Does this mean that we'll see a new version of the iconic Green Ranger at some point, or will he be saved for a sequel? Looks like we'll have to wait and see. 3) "It's Morphin' Time!" The first Power Rangers trailer memorably ended with Dacre Montgomery's Jason starting to morph into his Red Ranger suit. Here, we get the rest of that scene and a proper look at how the rebooted Rangers will change into their superhero outfits. In the old days, the Rangers would hold out their morphers and shout the name of their respective dinosaurs at the camera before magically appearing in their suits. In the movie, it looks like the gang will have to stand on special power podiums that materialize their suits around them. Whether they always have to stand on these to suit up, or whether they can morph on the go as in the series, remains to be seen. The best part is that Jason recites the original show's catchphrase at this point: "It's morphin' time!" Presumably, it's a phrase he adlibs just this once, and won't be used all the time like in the show, but it's nice to hear it all the same. 2) Rangers Vs. Putties Things quickly heat up as the trailer gives us our first proper look at the Rangers in action. After a brief hero shot moment of the team emerging from the dark in slow-motion, the Rangers get to work battling a troupe of Rita Repulsa's soldiers. Fans will recognize these as modern versions of the Putty Patrollers, who the Rangers would easily beat up in droves in pretty much every episode of the TV show. As far as henchmen go, the Putties must be the most infamously ineffectual of the lot. It also didn't help that they looked like exactly what they were - just a bunch of guys in grey lycra suits. Going by the trailer, the Putties might look more formidable here - they're taller, bigger and less humanoid - but they're still just as easy to defeat. Still, we wouldn't want it any other way. As for what they are exactly, at one point we see Rita ram her staff into the ground, causing Putties to rip themselves up from the earth. It looks like Rita will retain her ability to make monsters in the movie, and can now form rock and soil into golems to act as her foot soldiers. 1) Megazord And Goldar The trailer ends with a brief but exciting look at what's probably the movie's big third act climax, at least if it's going to mirror the structure of an episode from the original series. When Rita sends a giant golden monster - a version of Mighty Morphin's Goldar - to attack Angel Grove, the Rangers appear in their Zords to stop him. We can guess that this doesn't go to plan, as the trailer then cuts to them combining their Zords to form one giant, humanlike Megazord. Speaking of which, the Megazord didn't look up to much when we saw it in toy form, but it cuts the mustard in live-action. The blue power source at its centre cleverly connects with the Rangers' own power cores and the CGI is pretty decent. That said, it is a lot less endearing than the blockier, more toyetic version from the original show. There's a lot to take in in the last thirty seconds of the trailer, but it looks like there will be some awesome Zord action to enjoy. Despite the new looks, the sight of the Rangers attacking Goldar with their individual Zords before teaming up is just so much a part of Power Rangers' DNA that it can't fail to excite any long-standing fan of the franchise.
