8 Marvel TV Characters Who Need To Appear In The Movies

For all the talk of the Marvel Cinematic Universe being one big connected timeline, it's basically made up of two separate continuities – that of the films and the TV shows. While the Netflix series contain the odd oblique reference to The Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sports the odd movie guest star like Lady Sif or even Nick Fury, there really isn’t too much go-between among them. One of the things that fans most want going forward is for the TV characters to crossover to the movies. Obviously, there are logistical issues here - TV production moves at a much quicker pace than the movies – and potential setbacks – will movie audiences be familiar with the TV shows? – but it surely has to happen at some point. Thankfully, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige thinks so, too, as he has called further crossbreeding between the two “inevitable.” So, which of the many characters running around in the TV branch of the MCU should get a shot at the big screen? Well, here are our top 8 picks. 8) Dottie Underwood Agent Carter might have only run for two short seasons before it was cruelly cancelled, but it still managed to give Peggy a brilliant nemesis in the Russian assassin who goes by the name of Dottie Underwood. Played by Bridget Regan, Dottie was a brilliantly kick-ass yet completely barmy enemy who stole the show whenever she turned up. What makes Dottie a prime contender to appear in the movies, though, is that she's a product/victim of the Black Widow programme, just like the more famous Natasha Romanoff. Now that Marvel are apparently planning a Black Widow solo movie, perhaps an older Dottie could appear as Natasha’s mentor in the Red Room (the Widow training facility). In that case, she probably couldn’t be played by Bridget Regan again, but it would be a nice bit of connectivity between the movies and the TV shows. 7) Agent Coulson OK, obviously Agent Phil Coulson isn’t an exclusively TV character like the others on this list, as it was his success in the movies that got him his own lead role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, he does deserve to return to the movies for one pretty important reason. Seeing as Coulson has never even been mentioned since his ‘death’ in The Avengers, we can assume that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes still think he did actually pop his clogs – when we all know that Fury had him brought back to life. This seems like something they ought to know, so perhaps Coulson could pop up for a quick cameo to explain the truth. The upcoming two-part extravaganza Avengers: Infinity War promises to unite more characters than ever before. It’s already fan-baiting enough, so why not have Clark Gregg drop in just to quickly say “I’m not dead" before disappearing again? 6) Claire Temple Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple is one of the few characters to turn up in both Daredevil and Jessica Jones. In her capacity as a nurse, she has helped both of those vigilantes (as well as Luke Cage, who will shortly get his own series, too) get out of some tight spots. Fans will know that Claire is basically the MCU’s version of Night Nurse, a comics character who runs her own private clinic to treat superheroes after they have been in their usual scraps. Given that, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Dawson to appear in the movies. She doesn’t even have to be named. Just have Steve Rogers (I have a feeling she would be on Team Cap) be stitched up by her at one point. 5) Killgrave One recurring criticism of Marvel’s movies is the lack of great villains (apart from Loki, of course). By contrast, the TV shows – particularly the Netflix ones – keep dishing out well-characterized antagonists. David Tennant’s Kilgrave, as seen in Jessica Jones, is one of the best of the lot... which is why it would be great to see him in the films. In the comics, the mind-controlling Zebediah Killgrave AKA The Purple Man is a frequent foe of The Avengers. As such, it would make sense for him to face up against the big guns, as well as Jessica Jones. Seeing as Jessica’s personal story with him wrapped up in JJ season one, a new take on the character could see him being reborn in all his purple-skinned glory. If his main goal was world domination rather than a mere infatuation with Jessica, he could be one of the team’s most unstoppable foes. 4) The Punisher Frank Castle has previously had three attempts at big screen stardom with each failing to take off. Clearly, TV is a much better home for him, after Jon Bernthal nailed the character in Daredevil season two. As that series ended with him properly becoming The Punisher, however, a cameo in someone else’s movie could be on the cards. In the comics, The Punisher made his debut as an antagonist of Spider-Man. In the MCU, this would be pretty bizarre on the surface of it, seeing as Spider-Man: Homecoming seems to be a throwback to those feel-good John Hughes movies of old. Dropping an ultra-violent serial killer in the middle of that might imbalance the tone somewhat. Nevertheless, if he was toned down slightly for the film, it would be great fun to see Spidey going against The Punisher. 3) Jessica Jones Enough about the side characters, the ones we really want to see migrate to the movies are the heroes. The clash of personalities between the streetwise Netflix heroes, in particular, with the government-sanctioned (well, some of them) Avengers is too good a scenario to pass up. Just imagine Jessica Jones - more of an anti-hero than a superhero - meeting Steve Rogers, with all his old-fashioned values? Or what about the battle of quips that would ensue if she met Tony Stark? No offence to Robert Downey Jr. and his quick delivery, but I think the acerbic wit of Krysten Ritter’s character would beat even him. In the comics, Jessica (along with hubbie Luke Cage) joined Cap’s Secret Avengers, formed after the fallout of the Civil War event. Dare we hope for something similar to happen on screen? 2) Daredevil On the other hand, Jessica Jones might be a tad out of place with the likes of The Avengers – apart from her loner demeanour, she doesn’t even have a costume. Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil, then, would be an even better fit to crossover to the movies. The Man Without Fear is another character with connections to Spider-Man, as the pair have frequently sparred and teamed up in the comics. In the movies, Daredevil could perhaps act as a(nother) superhero mentor for Spidey. Well, they're both red-suited heroes who zip about New York, so they're bound to bump into each other, right? Charlie Cox has previously revealed that there is a clause in his contract that means he is legally obliged to appear in a movie if asked - let’s hope that Marvel exploit this clause sometime in the near future. 1) Wilson Fisk Despite how much we would love to see all the heroes unite, Daredevil’s Wilson Fisk takes the top spot of this list because in many ways he seems the most likely TV character to appear in a movie. While it might be confusing for audiences if other heroes like Daredevil and Jessica turned up, Fisk could easily cameo as a mob boss type character without any previous backstory needed. Yet another character who is tied to Spider-Man, Fisk is arguably just as synonymous with the wallcrawler as he is Daredevil. A brief appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming would only be right, then, and could surely be easily fixed up. Unfortunately, Vincent D’Onofrio himself has seemingly ruled out a movie appearance on Twitter, saying: “it would be great but I don’t think it will happen.” But is he telling truth?
