Though the God of Thunder went with short hair for last year’s Thor Ragnarok, some newly released Avengers: Infinity War concept art indicates that Chris Hemsworth’s character might’ve already been on the path to growing back his lengthy locks by the time the fight against Thanos kicked off.

Concept illustrator Rodney Fuentebella took to Instagram with an early illustration of Thor rocking his famous eye patch along with a little ponytail. In the caption, Fuentebella explains that he “wanted to go for the wondering warrior look,” though the final design for the film was ultimately crafted by Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding. And while we’ve certainly seen more drastic alternatives for how the character could’ve looked in the Russo Brothers’ latest release, it’s still strange to think that the ongoing saga that is Thor’s hair almost took this endearing turn.

In recent weeks, we’ve been getting a generous array of artwork based around Hemsworth’s appearance in Infinity War, with one previously released illustration showing the Avenger in an all-black getup inspired by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates comic series. Meanwhile, we’ve also seen a couple of suggestions for how Thor’s latest weapon could’ve turned out differently, with one image indicating that he might’ve wielded the Jarnbjorn axe as his Mjolnir replacement.

On top of that, things could’ve varied even more for the character’s personal journey, with previous concept art revealing how Thor and Rocket were initially intended to fight some giant snakes in Avengers: Infinity War. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, but you can expect further adventures and even some sweet new outfits for the pair when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
