Black Adam

DC Producer Says Black Adam’s Definitely Happening, Offers Update

Collider caught up with Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia to discuss the current status of the film and why it's shaping up to be an edgy take on the DC anti-hero.

Despite attracting a major movie star in Dwayne Johnson, Warner’s Black Adam movie has lain dormant for months while its DC brethren (i.e. Aquaman and Shazam!) have been placed on the fast-track.

Those two films will be hitting theaters within the next 10 to 12 months, as the studio looks to course-correct its fledgling franchise in the aftermath for Justice League. So it’s fair to say that Black Adam has found itself pretty far down the pecking order at Warner Bros. But make no mistake, it is on the way.

Case in point: Collider caught up with Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks, who admitted that he’s been searching for The Rock’s superhero vehicle for years. And now, it’s finally here – well, almost here.

As Garcia tells Collider, Black Adam is still incubating in development, though it seems the script is coming together “really well.”

Black Adam is definitely happening. We’re actually very deep into a script on it right now, which is coming along really well. I’m really excited with the story we’ve crafted. Look, I’ve always been a huge comic book fan. I’ve always had this dream, I’ve always wanted to—You know, you kind of have like these goals of like, ‘One day I’d love to be able to do this and this,’ and making a superhero movie was definitely always one of my dreams. For the longest time, you know you kind of have this living superhero in Dwayne Johnson, so I was always trying to figure out what’s the perfect character that will kind of fit him and his look and his build and his kind of edge and the attitude he’s got.

Could this lead to a production start next fall? It’s certainly not out of the question, though Garcia is more concerned with polishing the latest script from Adam Sztykiel before ordering Black Adam before the cameras.

Via Collider:

So where we are now with Black Adam is we just got our latest script [from Adam Sztykiel]. We’re doing some revisions on it. We’re extremely excited about it, the studio’s very excited about it. And I’m telling you man, as a comic book fan, when this thing comes out, it is going to be amazing [laughs]. This is the fanboy in me talking to you, it’s going to deliver on the goods of everything you’d want to see Black Adam do, he’s going to be doing in this film.

If even half of Hiram’s promises hold true, then Black Adam will be unlike any DC movie we’ve seen before. Whether it’s enough to tip the scales in favor of an R-rating is another question entirely, but comic book movie fans can at least take solace in the fact that Dwayne Johnson’s first superhero project is finally beginning to make some headway in development.
