This week is set to be a big one for Marvel fans, with three new trailers expected to drop online: Captain Marvel, Avengers 4 and The Avengers Project. And it all kicks off tonight with the second full-length preview for Carol Danvers’ upcoming solo outing.

Yes, one of the MCU’s most powerful characters is about to make her big debut, but Captain Marvel isn’t your standard origin story. Rather, it’s a cosmic adventure unlike any we’ve ever seen in the franchise and it’ll involve the Kree empire, Skrulls, a digitally de-aged Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, leader of the Skrull invasion.

All of that and more is teased in today’s brand new trailer, which tells us that Carol’s set to blaze a path of her own through the cosmos, which is all the more intriguing when you consider that Captain Marvel is straddling the line between the MCU’s Phase 3 and Phase 4.

Not only that, but Kevin Feige recently told us that the heroine’s about to become the new figurehead of the franchise – presumably at the expense of Iron Man and/or Cap – meaning Captain Marvel’s here to stay. Which is just as well, given that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are still in a pretty tough spot following Infinity War and its frankly unforgettable climax, where Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe with the snap of his fingers.

Meanwhile, co-director Anna Boden had this to say about Carol a while back:

This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection. But what makes her special is just how human she is. She’s funny, but doesn’t always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn’t always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.

No doubt the arrival of Carol Danvers will bring about some major changes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Will she become the Avengers’ last line of hope against the Mad Titan though? It seems pretty certain, especially if Captain Marvel‘s alien powers far exceed those of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – or, should we say, what’s left of them.
