We may have an idea of who might lead the Creature Commandos into combat. Also, is Zachary Levi having delusions of grandeur or is he just staying in character? And flip a coin to figure out who will be the next DC characters to enter the new DCU.
The Creature Commandos may have found a leader
Rick Flag may be no more but his family name will live on in the DCU. At least that’s what the internet detective squad hot on the trail for potential Creature Commandos spoilers think they’ve sussed out. As it happens, comic book movie heavy Frank Grillo, who was last seen in the MCU playing Captain America’s favorite punching bag Crossbones, has been laying down heavy clues that he’s jumping ship to the competition (well maybe landing on another ship following being blown up is a better way to put it).
Grillo laid down a serious intimation on social media that he’s going to be working with DC in the future and while some have speculated he might play Titans/JLA baddie Deathstroke he’s got the perfect credentials to play Rick Flag, Sr., leader of the Creature Commandos. And seeing as how he responded to James Gunn’s DCU Chapter 1 – Gods & Monsters announcement with a row of fire emojis it’s fair to say he has a LOT of enthusiasm for the first phase of the DCU.
The age-old Shazam vs Deadpool argument
Zachary Levi may be an edgier, even the edgiest, version of Shazam that’s ever made it to the big screen but the Chuck star seems like he might have mistaken the character for a completely different one. Levi contends that Shazam is more or less the DC version of Marvel’s insanely scatological, indestructible. and deeply profane court jester Deadpool. That’s right. The DC character that’s so square he makes Superman look edgy is the equivalent of the guy who killed a dude with a Zamboni.
To be fair, Levi is right that Shazam gets to be a bit more meta about the DC Universe (whatever that might be right now) but let’s not put on our brown pants just yet. Levi’s going to have to break way more fourth walls to match wit with the Merc with the Mouth and it’s probably not going to happen in Fury of the Gods (which that may be his last chance to do it).
There’s a 50/50 chance these guys are gonna be in the DCU
We know at least a little bit about what characters are making the cut from the DCEU to the new DCU but so far info has been thin on the ground. Superman will return (not with Henry Cavill). Batman of course. Aquaman and The Flash both have movies coming out but only Ezra Miller’s The Flash has been confirmed to be part of the DCU (for now anyway). Thankfully James Gunn has stepped up to confirm five characters who will DEFINITELY be appearing in the DCU but he’s still playing it close to the chest. Gunn confirmed that five out of the ten characters selected as faves by IGN magazine will be in the upcoming universal reboot.
Unfortunately, he didn’t narrow it down any further than that. Fans can therefore look forward to possibly seeing either Nightwing, Martian Manhunter, Lobo, Brainiac, Deathstroke, Jason Todd (as either Robin or the Red Hood), Zatanna, the Court of Owls, Mister Freeze, or John Constantine up on the big screen in the future. Take your pick and make your bets. Thankfully we can narrow the field a bit. John Constantine is definitely returning but it may only be in the form of a sequel to the Keanu Reeves film, featuring an American version of the character.
Brainiac, having only been featured on the small screen, seems a likely choice for a Superman villain. Jason Todd and Nightwing will almost certainly appear in some Bat-Family capacity in The Brave and the Bold. With Lobo also all but certain, it seems like a bad idea to get your hopes up about seeing Zatanna, Freeze, Martian Manhunter, or Deathstroke in the first releases of the revamped DCU.
