Nato And Remy’s Last Stand: 2013’s Independent Horror Hits

While keeping up with all the mainstream horror releases of any year might be hard enough, it's even harder to view all the lesser-known independent features that are released each and every week. While Video On Demend services give smaller films the audience they deserve, it's sure making life hectic for film fans and reviewers. It's nearly impossible to keep up with the always growing backlog of horror films, and even I can admit a few films were missed I would have loved to see - but both Remy and I did our damnedest to catch every film in our power. Dedication, thy name is insanity.

Nato – Dead Sushi

In Soviet Russian, sushi eat you! Wait, no, sorry, that’s modern day Japan according to filmmaker Noboru Iguchi, where the sushi has had just about enough of us humans gobbling up the raw delicacy piece by piece. Yes, this film is deviating from my more serious previous picks, but there’s always room for some serious Japanese extremist cinema in my book. If you’ve seen films like Tokyo Gore Police, Machine Girl, and such other visual treats, Dead Sushi should satiate your depraved tastes. There’s no getting around it – sushi is going to be flying around in the air attacking people, turning them into rice-covered sushi zombies. There’s no being on the fence about this premise. Either that description makes you want to rent Dead Sushi immediately, or you’ve already clicked off this page.

For those of you with more exotic horror tastes, there’s a treasure trove of scenes awaiting your glorious viewing. The sushi zombies are only half the fun, as our story centers around an ambitious woman named Keiko (Rina Takeda) and her want to be a master sushi chef. Martial arts battles break out when she challenges other chefs, there’s a crazy hobo type character with a squid that flies around like a heat seeking missile, the flying sushi can take forms – and that’s all before the fantastic boss battle that pays off like hitting the obscurity jackpot. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll never want to eat sushi again – well, OK. Not really. You’re just going to laugh, a whole lot, preferably with your friends during an epic midnight movie session.

The blood runs like soy sauce in this fishy horror comedy from that wacky land of Japan, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What were your favorite under-the-radar horror flicks from this year? Let us know in the comments!
