Nato And Remy’s Last Stand: Freddy Krueger’s Die-light Reel

Freddy Krueger - The Sinister Sandman, The Haunter Of Nightmares, The Sleepy-Time Killer, Mr. Pointy Fingers - Ok, none of those names actually have ever been used to describe one of horror's most notorious icons, but it doesn't matter what you call him - he's the man. If we all went to hell right now and entered the exclusive VIP section with flaming velvet ropes, Freddy would be surrounded by demon chicks and signing their evil tits like the horrifying rockstar he is. He's had his own TV show, his own crossover film (Freddy Vs. Jason), and even appeared in a recent Mortal Kombat game! Hell, I just bought a pair of Freddy Krueger inspired Nike Dunks myself! How have Remy and I NOT dedicated a post to Wes Craven's most famous character yet? If you didn't get the hint, Remy and I decided to pay our respects to my personal favorite slasher villain of all time by highlighting our 6 favorite deaths at the hands of our sweater-wearing scoundrel. I know, there's just so many to pick from, as countless sequels have followed A Nightmare On Elm Street, and so many creative kills have been imagined by a handful of eager directors, but Remy and I just had to personally give Freddy Krueger his deserved credit ourselves. The dude has carved more bodies than turkeys at the first Thanksgiving - it's only fair we pick his best. With that said, pop some sleeping pills and head to dream town where we'll meet Freddy for a visual tour of his best "works of art." Don't worry, even if you don't like our writing I've included a video re-cap of each kill as well, so it's like a cinematic picture book! Yay visual aids! Remy's Picks Roach Motel from Part 4: The Dream Master Some people condemn Freddy for his overly comical kills, but that is where his charm lays. So many slashers have no personality at all, and just sort of stroll around, silently killing kids - but not Krueger. Freddy plays off their fears, and in the process, the audience's as well. I, for example, hate bugs. I hate them. I find their tiny armored bodies to be repulsive, and even though I know I am bigger and more powerful then them, they scare me, and this scene took that to hilarious new heights. The real kicker in the scene is the first thing Freddy does, walking up to Debbie while she is lifting weights (an oddly overused trope for 80's horror heroines) and pushing the weight down until her arms break. Then, from the broken arms sprout giant roach legs. Debbie continues to turn into a roach, until finally she is a helpless little roach inside a roach motel that Freddy crushes in his hands. It is silly, and over the top, and everything we love about old school Freddy. Freddy Worm/Snake Swallows The Medium From Stigmata in Part 3: The Dream Warriors This is, without a doubt, one of the best horror movie kills ever, even though it is not actually a kill. Everything about it, from the badass effects, to the idea of being swallowed alive by something while you are looking in its eyes and screaming, sticks with you. In this kill, Freddy turns into a giant worm/snake creature (that still has Freddy's face on it) and he begins to swallow Kristen, played by Patricia Arquette, whole, from the feet on up. To some the moment is comical, and it should be to an extent, but the fact that this was a time before CG ruined horror, and they actually had to build a giant Freddy beast that was actually swallowing Patricia Arquette is mind blowing to me, still to this day. This scene is so iconic in horror there is an action figure for it, designed by Todd McFarlane. This kind of fun and fantastic scope is missing from today's horror. Few can argue that. Tie Between Wizard Freddy and Nintendo Freddy in Part 3: The Dream Warriors and The Final Nightmare, Respectively. Okay, I was going to go with the time that paralyzed kid turned into a wizard, Dungeons and Dragons style, and was fucking Freddy up with nerd magic, but I realized that is from Part 3, and I already gave Part 3 some love on the list, so I decided to go with the scene in The Final Nightmare when Freddy jumped into a Nintendo game and royally destroyed a kid (Breckin Meyer) using the Power Glove. Yes, you heard that correctly. The motherf*#(%!g Power Glove. You see, growing up I was a nerd. You might not have known it by looking at me, but Dungeons and Dragons references and Nintendo references were the ultimate to me, so to have those things mashed up in a horror film, which was my other ultimate love, equaled pure magic - like the first time you ate a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. Yes, it was kinda like that. Though we watch a scene like this now and laugh at how dated it is, to see a slasher from a horror movie jump into a video game (the only place us nerd kids were truly safe from bullies) and mess us up in there still is inexplicably awesome to me. Sadly, Freddy has lost all that charm now that he is played by Rorschach. Nato's Picks Johnny Depp's Messy Demise In A Nightmare On Elm Street What better way to start my selections than with a classic, showcasing Johnny Depp's messy demise in the very first A Nightmare On Elm Street. Yup, that's right, for those of you non-horror fans, a wee-little Jack Sparrow was brutally murdered by none other than Freddy Krueger one night while sleeping in his bed. Before anyone really knew the destruction Freddy is capable of, Depp's death really set the tone on carnage and brutality by the copious amount of blood spewed from his bed as he's sucked in. Well not sucked in, pulled in I should say, as Freddy reaches his arms from out of the bed and pulls Depp into a giant hole which we can only assume leads to the depths of hell. A geyser of blood then rockets out of the hole and continues until the entire room is just dripping in the gooey substance, which his poor mother sees when opening the door to her son's room. And you thought your room was messy as a kid? Comic Book Dude Gets Shredded In Part 5: The Dream Child While one of the least gory kills of the bunch, Freddy's superhero antics and colorful violence easily make Mark's death in The Dream Child one of the more creative Krueger kills. Mark (Joe Seely) is your average comic book nerd stereotype, lusting for the pretty character and wanting to be the hero. Well, when he mistakenly falls asleep reading comics one night, Freddy gives Mark the chance to be that hero, entering some black and white dream landscape which is like a comic book panel. Freddy's first move is going punk and skateboarding directly at Mark as a stunning distraction, only to kill a plumply stuffed Greta (Mark's friend) right before his eyes. This is when Mark goes into hero mode, looking like some high-tech western gunslinger (The Phantom Prowler) who pumps Freddy full of lead. This of course doesn't do shit because Mark's playing on Freddy's home turf, as Krueger gets back up in "Super Freddy" form - a muscular version of our merciless killer. Mark uselessly fires his guns at Super Freddy, but ends up only prolonging his fate. Freddy walks over and takes a swipe at him, and we now see Mark as a paper thin drawing with a chunk now cut out, as all the color leaks from Mark's figure, signifying his loss of blood. All that's left is a waving paper form in the shape of Mark, which Freddy easily turns into confetti. As I said, not exactly the bloodiest and most vile kill Freddy has ever pulled off, but easily the most fun. Freddy Plays Puppet Master in Part 3: The Dream Warriors My favorite Freddy kill is a nice little mix between grotesque and fun, showcasing Krueger's puppeteering skills in The Dream Warriors. Seriously, I still squirm every time I watch this scene, even though I know exactly what's about to happen. At first, Freddy possesses the form of a hanging marionette, hinting that our killer might stay in toy form for a unique Chucky-like kill. This isn't the case though, as he walks over to his victim Phillip's (Bradley Gregg) bed in toy form, but then morphs back to his "human" form at the foot of the bed. Phillip, paralyzed by fear, watches as Freddy makes a cut down each arm and each leg, and then pulls the veins out of his body so he can work him like the marionette shown before. Ugh, yes, Freddy is working Phillip by his veins. With total control over the young man's body, he walks Phillip through the hospital hallways and rooms, dripping blood as he goes, but everyone just assumes he's sleepwalking or going for a leisurely stroll - until Freddy walks him to a windowsill. Teetering on the edge for all his friends to see, Freddy toys with him for a short amount of time, letting him sway back and forth, but then cuts his "strings" and lets Phillip fall to his death. Tortured, defeated, and then thrown from a building - Freddy sure knows how to put on a show. Bonus! Freddy's Fatalities In Mortal Kombat 9 Well since you've all been such good little followers, I've decided to include this little Freddy treat for those non-gamers.
