‘Attack on Titan’ just acknowledged *that* Armin and Yelena meme in a hilarious new scene

This scene in the latest Attack on Titan episode reveals that MAPPA is all too aware of that Armin and Yelena meme.

With Marley and the remaining Eldians at each other’s throats in the final season, almost every episode of Attack on Titan is full of death and destruction. Still, it seems as though the producers haven’t yet forgotten to include lighthearted scenes to even out the weight of all of these dark plot developments.

During tonight’s episode, “Deception,” the Marleyan military continued to pin down the remaining Paradis fighters in Shiganshina, while Eren Yeager’s Attack Titan, strengthened by the Warhammer Titan, held out against the Armor, Jaw, and Cart Titans. Without giving too much away to those of you who haven’t already watched the episode, there’s also a really funny scene involving Armin and Yelena that’s currently going viral on social media.

As you’ll already know, the first arc of the fourth season begins four years after the events of season three. That’s why almost every character looks different from what we’ve come to know and expect, even in Hajime Isayama’s manga. For Armin Arlert, that change embodied itself in a new haircut. The only catch is that another character who goes by the name of Yelena also had the exact same haircut, leading many fans to often confuse the two during numerous scenes in the first part of season four.

Now, developer MAPPA has fully acknowledged this meme by giving fans a jumpscare during the most recent episode. As can be seen below, Armin is still trying to convince his comrades to protect Eren when suddenly Yelena appears behind him, perfectly depicting just how similar they look, though the height gap is basically the animators telling us that we’re too dense for not being able to tell the difference.

The scene is actually adapted directly from the pages of the source manga, but the way it’s animated is definitely a little cheeky on MAPPA’s part, to say the least.
