Donald Trump has done his best to keep many Africans out of the United States, putting in place strict entry bans on anyone from Chad, Eritrea, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Sudan. However, soon after retaking office, he carved out a specific exception for white South Africans.
His Feb. 2025 executive order, titled “Addressing Egregious Actions of the Republic of South
Africa,” claimed that white South Africans face “government-sponsored race-based discrimination” and called out South Africa for accusing Israel of committing genocide.
And so, in May 2025, a group of white South Africans arrived in the United States to a warm welcome from US officials, making them one of the few “ethnic minority” groups the Trump administration is eager to help. As of writing, around 16-17,000 white South Africans have entered the United States (per the Center for Immigration Studies), but it seems that the recent midterms may have caused some paranoia.
Is this really that scary for them?
On X, the account ‘American Viking Boer’ has been chronicling his journey as an immigrant to the United States. In April 2026, he said, “Im from South Africa. Got approved on Thursday as refugee. Waiting for cultural orientation then tickets. Cant wait to hit the states, get a job and carry on with a normal life,” adding, “Thank you for opening your gates and saving our asses.”
In July, he confirmed that he and his family were “heading to Texas,” saying, “Texas is where we want to raise our children strong, in a place that stands for liberty, self-reliance, and the American spirit we’ve dreamed of. No more waiting around. God has opened doors, and we’re walking through them with Viking resolve!”
Now, apparently, there’s suddenly a spanner in the works for the Viking Boer family, as Texas has now gone blue for the first time in decades. Viking Boer says he’s “broken,” and that it feels like he may as well never have left South Africa:
In the replies, he went on to hint that he’s ready to “stand his ground” against whatever a Democratically-controlled Texas might mean for him, before underlining that he will fight to the end on behalf of the state he’s been in for about four months: “We cant move when we lose. We must stand our ground. This is home.”
South Africans don’t seem to be taking him particularly seriously, with many taking the opportunity to say he isn’t missed and finding some amusement in his supposed predicament:
This poster might eventually have good reason to be worried, as multiple Democrats have spoken out against Trump singling white South Africans out for preferential treatment. Democrat Senators Alex Padilla and Dick Durbin, and Reps. Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal have variously called the policy “morally indefensible,” “illegal,” and a prioritization of “a single privileged racial group.”
