A woman who posts on TikTok as Melissa (@melissalomuscio) said she left a Walgreens visit confused after a staff member first told her a refill was not ready, then handed it over once she mentioned her insurance was changing. Melissa explained the incident in a video, which she captioned “America explain,” and drew 230,300 views at the time of writing.
Melissa said she called Walgreens that morning and asked whether her prescription could be refilled and if it was ready. She quoted a female employee as saying, “Yeah, totally, we can do that for you today, like, come in.” She said she then went to the store. At the counter, she said she told a male employee, “Hello, I’m here to pick up my prescription.” She quoted him as answering, “Ooh, I think it’s coming in tomorrow.”
She said she told him she had called earlier and been told to come in that day, adding that it was the last day on her current insurance and she would switch to a new plan the next day. She described herself as “just talking out loud.” After that, she said, “And he was like, hmm, one second. And then he like walks to the back and then he comes back with my prescription.”
Commenters focused on insurance timing and pharmacy phone service after the video spread
Melissa said she then asked the employee why he had not given it to her at first. She said she asked, “Sir, why didn’t you have it before? Why are you gatekeeping it? Why are you telling me to come back tomorrow when you had it? Like, what is that about?” She said she had tried to think of reasons and could not think of one good reason he would not have handed it over immediately. She ended by asking viewers, “I don’t know, does anybody know? Odd.”
She described the sequence as a morning phone call that led her to the store the same day, a first answer that the medicine was due the next day, and a change after she mentioned the insurance switch. She said today was the last day she was on her current insurance. She did not name the medication or the specific Walgreens location in the video. For Walgreens, the complaints don’t stop at gatekeeping prescriptions, as a Texas woman was allegedly told by a pharmacist she was too young for a second vaccine dose.
Viewers reacted to both the pickup story and the claim that someone at Walgreens had answered the phone. One commenter said they thought the account sounded like a fantasy once Melissa said a Walgreens pharmacy had picked up. They wrote, “I really thought this was a fantasy when you said Walgreens pharmacy answered the phone.”
Other viewers pointed to the insurance change as the moment the employee’s answer shifted. One commenter said the worker appeared to avoid extra work that would have been needed the next day. They wrote, “because he didn’t want to do the work and realized he would have to do more work the next day because he would have to switch insurances he decided to give it to you.”
Some commenters used the clip to criticize large chain pharmacies and suggested other options. One wrote, “People need to stop using Walgreens and CVS. Find a small privately owned pharmacy or even one a grocery store.” Another wrote, “Walgreens is the absolute worst pharmacy around.” The pharmacy chain’s handling of prescriptions has drawn scrutiny, such as when an Austin woman arrived at Walgreens for her Wellbutrin prescription only to learn it had been handed to someone else.
Melissa did not say in the video whether she paid with the old insurance or what the employee told her after he returned with the bag. She presented the visit as an unanswered question about why the first answer at the counter did not match what she said she had been told on the phone and what she later received.
