A 97th Halloween birthday celebration ended in tragedy during the party. In her TikTok video by @bakedsocal, which has gained seven million views, the birthday cake baker described her friend group, which includes people in their 20s and 30s, along with the man named Vito.
The post carried the caption “Rip to an absolute legend.” The TikTok video opened with party footage of Vito, shown as an elderly man with white hair. She said this past week was Vito’s 97th birthday and that he wanted to celebrate by throwing a Halloween birthday rager. She explained that she needed to make him a cake for the occasion.
She recalled asking Vito earlier in the week what the key was to living such a long life. He told her it was to never drink cheap liquor, she said in the video. That advice led her to create a red wine chocolate cake.
The baker showed the cake process and party scenes before revealing the ending
The creator then showed herself in a kitchen wearing a black long-sleeved dress as she poured red wine into chocolate batter. She described being inspired to make a cake that sat on top like fine wine because of what she learned from Vito about never letting age stop you.
The finished two-tier cake appeared with white chocolate lettering that read “like fine wine” and decorative shell borders. Custom cakes don’t always turn out as planned, as one bakery followed decorating instructions too literally on a husband’s birthday cake.
The video also included party footage of Vito, shown as an elderly man with white hair and black-rimmed glasses in a black shirt and dark trousers. He appeared dancing under warm string lights and a disco ball effect, standing by a table with a bottle of liquor, clapping, and chatting with guests.
She said in the narration that Vito was the life of the party and that at 24 years old she honestly could not keep up with this man. She added that he lived his life to the fullest all the way up until his last moments, quite literally.
She said the night did not end as anticipated and that Vito made a dramatic exit. In the video she stated, “If there’s any way he could’ve chosen to go out, it would’ve been like this.” She continued that he was surrounded by people he loved while they celebrated his long and full life.
The baker, now shown in a black witch hat, carried the finished cake toward Vito in the living room. The video ended with off-screen voices singing “Happy birthday, happy birthday” as he stood by a table holding the cake, small pumpkins, and a blue bow. She expressed that she was just so grateful that she got to be a part of it.
Viewers quickly reacted to the unexpected ending after watching Vito dance and celebrate. One commenter wrote, “Girl that was TOO nonchalant.” Some focused on the timing of the events in the video. Another viewer said, “it’s his party and he’ll die if he wants to.” A different commenter asked, “HE DIED AFTER “STAYING ALIVE” PLAYED?!”
