What teams are playing in the Super Bowl and why are the quarterbacks making history?

Super Bowl LVII falls in the not-to-be-missed category for a few different reasons.

Super Bowl LVII kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4:30 p.m. mountain time at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, and will be nationally televised on Fox with Rihanna performing the halftime show. This year’s big showdown will see the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles facing off against one another, in a game that will make history for a few different reasons.

One unusual thing to note about the game is that it will mark the fifth time in NFL history that a head coach will face his former team in the Super Bowl. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid previously led the Eagles from 1999 to 2012 before making the jump to Kansas City in 2013, which has led some people to dub the game “The Andy Reid Bowl.”

The game is also being called “The Kelce Bowl” as it will be the first game in Super Bowl history to have two brothers playing against each other on opposite teams. Travis Kelce, 33, is the tight end who led the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV in 2020, while Jason Kelce, 35, is the Eagles center who helped clinch the birds’ 2018 win in Super Bowl LLI.

Another reason Super Bowl LVII will also be setting a historic precedent is because it marks the first time two Black starting quarterbacks — Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs and Jalen Hurts of the Eagles — will have faced off against one another.

Additionally, Mahomes, 27, and Hurts, 24, will be the youngest pair of starting quarterbacks in Super Bowl history. Though this will be Hurts’ first time playing a Super Bowl, Mahones was named MVP for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

In either case, it goes without saying that Sunday’s big game should be one for the books — and overzealous Eagles fans will just be the icing on the cake.
