‘Love Island’ 2023 already facing calls for tighter background checks following TikTok revelations

Allegations are flowing thick and fast.

The contestants for Love Island 2023 have finally been revealed, ranging from “super caring” 24-year-old beautician Ruchee and “always smiling” 22-year-old real estate agent Catherine, to 26-year-old gas engineer Mitchell who says “I thrive on being a gentleman”. Appearing on Love Island is a one-way ticket to reality TV superstardom, but immediately after the announcement, controversy instantly flared up around contestant George Fensom.

The 24-year-old Fensom is a business development executive from Bedford, promising to bring “dad jokes and dad dancing to the Villa”. He’d love to meet a woman who brings “more banter” than him, though he fears this may be “physically impossible”.

And what banter might that be? Well, how about a heaping helping of misogyny served with a side of homophobia? It took minutes for Twitter users to see his social media history, in which he says “shut up you f****t” and complained about “gay tweets”. But just as alarming are allegations of abuse from his ex-girlfriend.

Further posts allege a history of abusive behavior that has allegedly resulted in one former partner attempting to take her own life:

If all this is true, it appears Love Island‘s background-checking team may not be doing their jobs properly, as it’d only have taken a cursory glance at social media to discover this stuff. The summer season will officially begin on June 5 and is set to be filmed in Mallorca, Spain. That said, if these allegations prove true we suspect Fensom won’t be on board the flight to paradise and will be replaced with one of the reserve contestants.
