We’ve been getting more information on Disney Plus’s Obi-Wan Kenobi over the last few months, including some set photos and talk about what villains may be involved. The show will possibly premiere in early 2022, based on production having started this April. The latest reports on the Star Wars spinoff suggest that a young version of Princess Leia has been cast to join Ewan McGregor and company.
According to Cinelinx, Leia will play an important role in Obi-Wan’s story arc, and will reportedly be played by actress Vivien Lyra Blair, whose previous credits include We Can Be Heroes and Bird Box. Adding the young Skywalker to the plot was always a likely move, given that Obi-Wan will take place between Episodes III and IV, with the Jedi presumably keeping an eye on her while staying close to Luke on Tatooine.
It’s possible that, due to the series happening ten years after Revenge of the Sith, questions are raised about Leia’s heritage, prompting Obi-Wan into action. We already know that the Inquisitors are going to be one of the first season’s antagonists, and that Hayden Christensen is going to be reprising his part as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, although how much time he’ll spend onscreen together with McGregor is another question.
Outside of Leia, there’s plenty of scope in Obi-Wan Kenobi for other familiar characters such as Jabba the Hutt and Ahsoka Tano to make supporting turns, while it’s been revealed that Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse are starring as Luke’s uncle and aunt. Furthermore, we’d expect to see a youthful actor hired as the 10-year-old Luke Skywalker, with McGregor hinting that the character will be involved. If all’s going to plan, then, we’d hope to receive some footage and maybe even a teaser from Obi-Wan Kenobi this summer, ahead of a release next year.
