‘This is abuse’: Brother spirals after family spikes his food for TikTok views. The family stands by their choice

There's nothing funny about this.

The online community is absolutely reeling after a family on TikTok posted a so-called “prank” showing a man, who has been five years sober, realizing his own sister and mother had tricked him into eating a rum cake. The viral video, which was posted by user @xo.jessyy, captures the deeply disturbing moment the brother realizes he’d unknowingly broken his five-year streak, all while his mother and other sister seemed to laugh the whole thing off as a joke.

It’s a truly horrific situation that has sparked an enormous amount of outrage from viewers who correctly see the act as a profound betrayal, not funny at all. You can tell right away that this is not a funny situation, as the clip shows the brother becoming visibly shaken when the news sinks in. He tries to make light of it at first, joking about how he can’t drive, but anyone watching can see the anxiety and panic rising in him as he begins to realize the seriousness of what just happened.

The video quickly blew up, racking up over 2.9 million views and nearly 14,000 comments, because this isn’t just a simple prank—it’s an action that could have seriously endangered someone’s sobriety and mental health. It honestly makes you wonder how they were raised and what happened to make abuse seem funny to them.

Sister forces her sober brother to get drunk

The sister who originally posted the video had to put out follow-up videos to explain just how awful the situation was. She confirmed her brother’s five years of sobriety and explained exactly how the whole setup went down. She said, “So my brother has been sober for 5 years. My sister had gave him a piece of cake and didn’t tell him that there was rum in it. My brother started having almost a panic attack.”

She also had to address the common assumption that the alcohol would have cooked off during the baking process, clarifying that this wasn’t the case at all. According to her, it was one of those special “rum cakes where the rum is poured on top of the cake after it is baked. And that is exactly how this one was made.” That one detail is absolutely key, and it honestly makes the sister’s actions that much worse, because she knew there was still alcohol in there.

It’s hard to stay sober when you have an addiction. Stars like Bradley Cooper needed help from others, and even Johnny Depp needed Elton John. Having your own family hurt you must be terrible.

On the other hand, the fallout has been swift and brutal, and it only gets worse. @xo.jessyy went on to say that her brother no longer wants any contact with the sister who served him the cake—he just wants to “cut all ties with her.” She called the act what it is, stating that “you don’t mess with anyone’s sobriety,” which is a sentiment I think we can all agree with.
