Star Trek: Discovery Fans Petition For Captain Pike Spinoff

Have you been enjoying Pike being in the captain's chair on this season of Star Trek: Discovery? If so, then we've got some bad news for you, as Anson Mount's due to leave the CBS All Access series at the end of season 2. It's not down to the actor, however, but rather it's the writers wanting to swap who's in charge of the U.S.S. Discovery every season.

Fans aren’t ready to say goodbye to Mount’s charismatic captain just yet though and are now calling for the show’s producers to create a spinoff following Pike’s adventures on board the Enterprise in the years preceding James T. Kirk’s tenure on the ship. That wouldn’t be hard to do, either, as Discovery has already cast his two most important crew members, Ethan Peck’s Spock and Rebecca Romijn’s Number One.

In fact, fans are so keen on this idea that a petition has been created for the cause. Here’s how the description puts it, over on Change.org:

“Millions of Trekkies, both young and old, have absolutely loved Anson Mount’s (Pike) and Ethan Peck’s (Spock) portrayal of these iconic Star Trek characters. While we’ve enjoyed their performances on Discovery – we know its coming to an end…and we want more! Consider adding another Star Trek series to your line up starring these two great actors.”

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman has previously explained that Pike has to leave at this point in the show so as to line up with established canon, but if we’re being honest, the Trek timeline allows many years of unchronicled adventures before Pike meets his fateful accident and is replaced by Kirk. As such, there’s plenty of space there to fit in a prequel to TOS that fills in the missing years of the Enterprise’s mission log.

The good news is that all kinds of new Star Trek shows are in the works right now, so a Pike spinoff doesn’t seem totally out of the question. Maybe if you sign the petition, it’ll show CBS bosses that folks are fishing for more of the character?

In any case, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 has two more episodes left to go, with the next one arriving this Thursday on CBS All Access. Don’t miss it.
