If you want to see a new movie at the cinema anytime soon, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Multiplexes from New York to New Delhi to Newton Abbot are closed for the foreseeable future, leaving studios searching for creative means to release films that they had in the can before the shutdown. One of the immediate solutions has seen some of these movies prepped for watch-on-demand releases, an approach Warner Bros. have decided to take with Scoob!
Almost two months ago, the first season of Star Trek: Picard came to a close, thankfully arriving before the coronavirus pandemic caused any disruption. Patrick Stewart’s long-awaited return to the role drew generally positive reviews, and a second season has already been commissioned. Though all members of cast and crew are currently cooped up indoors as a result of lockdowns, planning for that second season is already underway.
The Great Lockdown, The Great Pandemic, The Great Pub Apocalypse, whatever denominator you choose for it, it’s had a big impact. Lockdowns aimed at curtailing the coronavirus’ spread forced film production to shut down, and forced actors to join the rest of us at home. Some are coping well, some are keeping in shape (did you see Chris Hemsworth’s workout?), and others, well...Others aren’t.
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has more on the go than just Deadpool you know. America’s favourite Canadian (other than Neil Young) has a new film ready for release this December, and it comes in the form of science-fiction/action-comedy/video game bricolage Free Guy. Though that wait is a little longer than had been planned – thank coronavirus, for that – the marketing gurus at 21st Century Studios are still keen to keep the hype alive.
Doctor Who finished its twelfth season back on March 1st, airing just weeks before the coronavirus pandemic began to severely disrupt release schedules. However, the show hasn’t entirely escaped the mayhem. A planned Christmas special titled “Revolution of the Daleks” had been in the works, as was a thirteenth series. Using his monthly production notes column in Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Chris Chibnall has updated the current status of those projects.
It’s been a long long time since we last saw The Riddler in a Batman movie. Edward Nigma’s most recent appearance came in Joel Schumacher’s camp opus Batman Forever back in 1995. That long wait will soon be coming to an end. Paul Dano has officially been cast in the role for Matt Reeves’ upcoming reboot of the franchise. We won’t get to see him in The Batman until next year at the earliest. In the meantime, creative fans do what creative fans do best – trying their hand at imagining for themselves. Today we’re going to point you in the direction of a piece by Instagram artist @willgray_art, which gives us a glimpse at what Dano could look like as Riddler. Believe it or not, one day we’ll be able to go to the movies again and currently scheduled for release in December, sci-fi epic Dune is one of the most tantalizing features on the immediate horizon. The Denis Villeneuve-directed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s cult novel has already had its first introduction to the public, with an array of photos released a few weeks back.
