Have you seen The Old Guard on Netflix yet? Judging by how popular the new Charlize Theron action movie is right now on the streaming platform, I’d say most fans have. It’s really the first big new movie to come along in quite some time and it’s also pretty good thanks to the direction by Gina Prince-Bythewood, some thrilling set pieces, fascinating mythology and the relationships between the characters.
Remember in The Lost World: Jurassic Park when Dr. Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) mocks his fellow humans for admiring the dinosaurs when he jokingly warns them that eventually there’s running and screaming? Well, Sam Neil is promising the same thing in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion.Â
Friday kicked off one of the bigger weekends of new releases that we've had in months. And there’s truly something for everyone. For war fans and dads, there’s Tom Hanks’ new WWII movie, Greyhound, over at Apple TV+, and for comedy lovers, be sure to check out Palm Springs on Hulu. Alternatively, if you’re willing to pay a little extra for VOD, there’s a new horror movie called Relic that's getting rave reviews.
Universal crashed and burned on their first attempt to create a Dark Universe featuring some well-known monsters including Frankenstein, The Mummy and Dracula. Instead of making blockbuster movies with big stars headlining them then, they went the other direction with The Invisible Man. Produced by the notoriously frugal but successful Blumhouse, the pic was a hit thanks to director Leigh Whannell’s economical filmmaking and Elisabeth Moss’ fantastic performance.
Due to the pandemic, theaters have been shut down, resulting in movie studios delaying all of their money-making blockbusters to either later this year or next year. As a result, the number of big action flicks to watch in 2020 have been few and far between. Perhaps the best of them though is Extraction, which debuted on Netflix back in April.
