Are there plans for a ‘Super Smash Bros.’ movie?

We need King Dedede on the big screen one way or another.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie just released its second trailer, featuring more characters in the Mario franchise. And while not everyone was keen to hear Chris Pratt voice the iconic red plumber, we got to hear Charlie Day’s stellar preview performance as Luigi and saw a different side of Princess Peach, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Not to mention, Nintendo Japan announced big Japanese names in the anime scene who will be involved in the Japanese dub of the film. So it seems like Nintendo is pulling all the stops to ensure the film’s success.

The second trailer however did not just showcase titles from the mainline Mario games. It also showcased other titles such as Mario Kart. And leaked images suggest a simple homage to the Donkey Kong arcade games since Pauline, the game’s former damsel in distress, was seen in promo photos.

Knowing that Nintendo is working towards producing its own home content outside of video games using its IP, will there be plans for Nintendo to produce a Super Smash Bros Movie? Or could The Super Mario Bros Movie hint towards a Nintendo crossover?

Could there be a Super Smash Bros. film? Is there one in the works?

It was reported by Gamesradar that Nintendo launched its own animation studio titled ‘Nintendo Pictures,’ intending to produce its content with the company’s popular IP. This means that Nintendo now has the resources to produce films and TV shows using its popular characters such as Link, Zelda, Kirby, and Samus, just to name a few.

Unfortunately, neither the production company nor Nintendo has announced any new projects due to Nintendo’s current focus on the Super Mario Bros Movie.

However, just because Super Smash Bros isn’t receiving its stand-alone film doesn’t mean it’s not canon in the Nintendo movieverse. The second trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie teased a melee duel between Mario and Donkey Kong, where the giant gorilla managed to easily beat Mario, just like in the famous brawling game.

Nintendo is now opening itself to produce its own films and the Super Mario Bros Movie is just the beginning. Hopefully, more Nintendo titles will be released on the big screen. In the meantime, The Super Mario Bros Movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 7, 2023.
