As the creator and estranged father to the malevolent Crota from last year’s The Dark Below, The Taken King will see the all-powerful Oryx setting out to enact his revenge. Assembling a hoard of mutated aliens, the towering monstrosity will serve as the overarching villain in Destiny‘s September expansion, which is big enough to warrant a physical release.

“We are Guardians. We are Hunters, Titans, and Warlocks. We have fought back the Darkness together. But now a new threat looms on the horizon: Oryx, The Taken King. Battle the greatest villain we have ever faced and begin the next Destiny adventure.”

According to the Game Informer cover story, The Taken King will introduce a plethora of new additions into Bungie’s shooter, including a retooled matchmaking system, the ability to test out weaponry, and a new-fangled mercy rule for the game’s Crucible mode. This means that if both teams are wildly unbalanced and the score is unfairly skewed, players can vote to reset the match to the beginning.

Finally, yesterday brought news that the studio had effectively axed Peter Dinklage from the shared-world shooter, with Uncharted stalwart Nolan North supplanting him in the role of AI companion Ghost.

Bungie will unleash Oryx and his legions of mutated minions when The Taken King launches for Destiny on September 15. But will it be enough to entice you back to the war against the Darkness? Let us know in the comments section below.
