Star Wars: Episode IX Trailer Will Reportedly Arrive In April

Trying to figure out when studios are going to drop trailers is becoming equivalent to haruspicy – an Ancient Roman method of divination involving animal guts being swirled around in a bowl. Given that we’re denied the inner working of the marketing departments, we can only peer at the vague omens and try our best to make some sense out of the mess. See last year’s frustrating wait for the Avengers: Endgame trailer as an example, in which various ‘authoritative’ journalists were wrong time after time when they predicted its release.

Bear all that in mind now, as those same insiders are saying that we’re going to have to wait until April to get our first look at Star Wars: Episode IXAs far as I can see, it’s as good a guess as anything else. Whereas previous rumors have pegged the film having a Super Bowl promo, it’s looking increasingly likely that Episode IX will follow the same marketing model as The Last Jedi. If that’s the case, then the trailer will debut during the annual Star Wars Celebration in April, just as TLJ’s did.

This also makes sense from the point of view of the Disney corporation as a whole. With Star Wars and the MCU having a very wide audience overlap, they’ll be eager to keep people focused on Avengers: EndgameCaptain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home in the first two quarters of 2019. But once the marketing machines for those films are in full swing, they can then begin to switch focus to getting everyone revved up for Episode IX.

One small consolation, however, is that if they do follow The Last Jedi’s model then we might know the film’s official title very soon. It was on January 23rd, 2017 that announced the last movie’s moniker, so perhaps they’ll do the same later this month?

Whatever happens, Star Wars: Episode IX will be hitting cinemas on December 20th, 2019. That’s at least one thing you can be sure of.
