Oklahoma students say they requested a refund for their food, then the restaurant owner accused them of stealing: ‘Came at us crazy’

It led to a police call.

A group of students said a stop for food in Norman, Oklahoma, turned into a public argument after they asked for their money back. In a TikTok posted by @kewiii3, the person filming said the owner “came at us crazy” from the start and accused them of taking a drink. The clip had drawn about 50,700 views.

The Nerd Stash described the group as Black college students and identified the business as Sam’s Southern Eatery. In the recording, someone in the group asked the name of the place and was told it was Sam’s Eatery in Norman. The outlet reported that the students denied taking anything, asked for a food refund, and later called the experience racist.

In the caption, @kewiii3 wrote that the owner “came at us crazy from the JUMP and literally brought her DOG back into the kitchen.” The poster thanked a man who “told her we didn’t steal anything” and added, “DO NOT COME HERE, they are W—–S!”

The recording shows a dispute over a drink, a dog, and a refund

On camera, a woman the students identified as the owner said she had been called in from outside because somebody was stealing a drink. She said her staff had contacted her. The person filming pushed back and asked whether the group was being accused of stealing. The students said nobody needed to take a drink they described as costing about $2.

The argument then shifted to the dog. The students said the owner had brought the animal behind the counter and into the kitchen, and they called that a health code violation. The woman said she had brought the dog in because somebody was stealing. The students asked when a dog was allowed behind the counter and said the reason did not change the rule.

They also said they wanted a refund on food they put at about $15. The woman said she would not refund the money until the drinks were paid for, because they had been consumed. The students said they had already paid and offered to cover a drink they put at about $3, or $3.25, once the food refund came through.

At one point, the woman said the drink total was $3.25 and asked whether the payment would be credit or cash. Refund disputes at restaurants can quickly turn tense, as when a Texas woman asked Applebee’s for a refund after finding a fly in her drink and the restaurant allegedly refused and threatened police involvement.

The two sides appeared to reach a short agreement. A person with the group said the owner had asked them to pay the $3, the sister had agreed, and the owner was then dragging the exchange out. The woman said she did not trust that the refund would be followed by payment for the drink.

She also said she was “a woman of God” and told the group she would be kind once they stopped being rude. The students said they would not trust a refund if they paid first, and one of them said a $15 payment showed they could cover $3.

A customer in the restaurant sided with the students and said they had not stolen anything. The person filming pointed to that customer and said the man had already cleared them. The owner kept returning to the claim that she had been called inside over a stolen drink. The students said another person had told them they could get a drink, and they denied helping themselves.

Police became part of the exchange as the group prepared to leave. The students said officers were being called and argued they had done what was asked. The woman said she had not called the police and that a customer had. The group said they did not want to be accused of running from officers, then decided to go and dispute the charge with the card company. Before leaving, one of them told the owner, “You and your sorry establishment can go to h–l.”

In a later comment, @kewiii3 said the owner “immediately came at me and my friends weird and accused us of stealing a $3 drink,” and “literally brought her DOG into the kitchen.” The poster said they agreed that paying for the drink would bring a refund on the food, but that the sister paid and the refund still did not come.

The comment said a customer told the owner they did not steal, and it ended with the claim that the restaurant was racist and not worth recommending. Accusations of stealing have surfaced in other customer-service disputes, such as when Minnesota Aldi staff escorted a customer out after misreading her receipt.

Viewers focused on the refund, the drink, and the workplace. One commenter questioned the decision to walk out, writing, “So y’all left without your refund…?” Another said they used to work at the restaurant and tied the woman to management, writing, “Omg I used to work here she was the manager who trained me the horror stories.” A third pointed to the back of the house, writing, “Yall should see how the food is stored in the back.”

Other comments questioned how the drink could have been taken in the first place. One viewer wrote, “How do you even steal drink they hand it over before you pay and you run off!? Am i too Canadian for this!?” Another suggested legal action over the money, writing, “Sue here for not giving you a refund.”
