Netflix pumps out so much content on an annual basis that it’s easy to lose track of the hidden gems and underrated favorites that could easily be worth your time, but calling Brand New Cherry Flavor an acquired taste would be an understatement of epic proportions.
The eight-episode existential nightmare dropped back in August of 2021, and while it didn’t make much of a noticeable dent in either the cultural conversation or the streaming service’s most-watched charts, anyone that bravely soldiered through from beginning to end isn’t likely to forget it in a hurry.
Alita: Battle Angel‘s Rosa Salazar toplines the cast as Lisa Nova, who heads to Los Angeles with big dreams of directing a feature film. However, when she’s betrayed by one of the very first people she decides to trust, things take a turn for the mind-meltingly bizarre.
Trying to sum up Brand New Cherry Flavor is a nigh-on impossible task, but that’s precisely why a lot of people love it so much, with Redditors currently in the midst of dissecting the outlandish, gruesome, and often horrifying descent into literal and figurative madness, with the consensus becoming immediately clear that cult classic status is well within reach.
Make no mistake about it, Netflix has never given the okay to anything quite like Brand New Cherry Flavor before, and it may never do so again given how the deranged swing for the fences didn’t translate its ambition into quantifiable success. That being said, a well-deserved reputation as an unsung gem is a suitable compromise.
