Telling the story of the Duttons of days past, the storyline will hold similar yet different troubles and heartaches for the family we love so much as they fight to protect the ranch decades before the likes of John Dutton. The storyline is heavy-hitting, and the cast is full of overwhelming star power.

1923 will become an instant sensation across the entertainment industry when it begins streaming next week. Before the show starts, we’ve got to find out who is part of the cast bringing this chapter of the Dutton’s story to life and what roles they’ll play as they do.

If you’re a long-time Yellowstone fan, you know that the characters and the stories they tell are far more complex than can easily be put into words; the same will undeniably hold true for 1923. Here’s to the prequel of a lifetime; it looks like we’ll be learning more about the heart of the family and their strength than we ever imagined.

Who will star in 1923?

The cast for 1923 is full of star power, and in a recent snippet, Taylor Sheridan notes that they filmed the series in epic proportions for a reason:

“The show just looks like feature films because aside from the locations being fantastic and the cast being some of the world’s greatest actors: this is a big sweeping saga. It’s going to bring a whole new scale to the world of the Dutton family.”

With a universe already so vast, it’s hard to imagine it on a larger thematic scale, but that looks to be what we’re in for when 1923 premieres. With an intricately detailed storyline, the cast had to be epic, too; when you find out who is telling this story, you’ll be blown away.

TV Guide shares the following actors and characters they play ahead of the series’ premiere.

The Dutton Family

Our beloved Dutton family is growing once more, and the cast set to bring them to life in 1923 is packed full of star power. With an emotionally charged storyline and stakes higher than ever, the actors and actresses set to carry this leg of the Dutton story are incredible.

Harrison Ford (Jacob Dutton)

Jacob is the patriarch of the Dutton family and the brother of James Dutton, played by Tim McGraw in the first Yellowstone prequel, 1883. He’s all grit and fight as he protects his family and the land they build their lives upon.

Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton)

Cara is the wife of Jacob Dutton and the matriarch of the family, with a deep desire to care for and protect them. She fights alongside her husband and isn’t scared of a challenge.

Darren Mann (Jack Dutton)

Jack is the son of John Dutton Sr. and a great-nephew to Jacob Dutton. Following in the family’s footsteps, he’s a rancher himself, and he cares for his loved ones and their land above all else.

James Badge Dale (John Dutton Sr.)

John Dutton Sr. is, as we stated above, Jack’s father and the oldest nephew of Jacob Dutton. He’ll be a vital member of the Dutton family and their longevity.

Marley Shelton (Emma Dutton)

Jack Dutton’s mother, Emma, is John Dutton Sr.’s wife and will support her husband and son as they face the trials of 1923.

Brandon Sklenar (Spencer Dutton)

Spencer is Jacob’s nephew, and his character is described as witnessing terrible and unthinkable events in WWI. It’s not evident yet, but it goes without saying that his time there will likely significantly impact who he is as a character.

1923 power players

There would be no story if not for the struggles and triumphs of the Dutton family and those who fight with or alongside them through it all. In addition to a powerful cast of family members who will stick together to stand up against whatever stands against them, there are essential characters outside of the Dutton family name.

Timothy Dalton (Donald Whitfield)

Described as cruel and wealthy, Donald will be an antagonist of the series in a major way and likely someone who will put up one heck of a fight.

Sebastian Roché (Father Renaud)

Headmaster of a school for American Indians, Father Renaud, will likely be a voice of reason throughout the series.

Michelle Randolph (Elizabeth Strafford)

Elizabeth isn’t a Dutton when the series starts, but her character is said to be lined up to marry into the family as 1923 progresses. She’s also described as feisty, and we love it already.

Robert Patrick (Sheriff William McDowell)

You can’t go wrong having a sheriff on your side, and the Duttons have found that bond in Sheriff William McDowell.

Brian Geraghty (Zane)

Zane is said to be “fiercely loyal” and a dedicated ranch hand. Knowing his way around the land and how to protect it will be valuable in this series.

Jerome Flynn (Banner Creighton)

Banner is said to be, quite frankly, a hard-headed Scottish brogue who leads a group of sheep ranchers in the town.

Aminah Nieves (Teonna Rainwater)

A student at the school in which Father Renaud is the headmaster, we were immediately thrilled to see the last name Rainwater in 1923.

Julia Schlaepfer (Alexandra)

Said to meet one of the Dutton family members while abroad; we’ve not been given many details about Julia yet.

Jennifer Ehle (Sister Mary)

Sister Mary works at the same school for American Indians that Father Renaud is the headmaster of.

As we learn more about the Dutton family and the rest of the incredible cast of characters set to bring life to 1923, we’ll let you know. For now, we’re counting down the days until we see the epic series premiere, and with a star-studded red carpet event already taking place and teaser trailers that made our jaws drop: the series is sure to be your can’t-miss watch of the season.

You can see 1923 when it begins streaming on Dec. 18 on Paramount Plus, and don’t forget to watch 1883 on the same streaming platform.
