Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Steven Spielberg‘s classic shark film Jaws for Blu-Ray next year. The film stars Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw and was very successful when it opened up in theaters, grossing over $470 million worldwide. It helped establish blockbuster filmmaking and even managed to take home a few Oscars.
I personally am excited to check out Jaws again on Blu-Ray. It’s been ages since I’ve watched the film and there’s no better way to experience the terror all over again then Blu-Ray. This is also a positive sign in the right direction for classic catalog titles to be released on Blu-Ray. A few years back studios mentioned slowing down production of older titles because they haven’t been selling as well. Hopefully Jaws breaks even more records on Blu-Ray.
There is no technical information on the Blu-Ray disc just yet, but I’d assume it will feature a 1080p video transfer and either a 5.1 or 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track.
Jaws is scheduled to hit Blu-Ray on August 14th, 2012.
