You might assume that in the wake of a new James Bond trailer, fans would be the ones to go weak at the knees with glee at the sight. And you’d assume right. After all, who could top the Bondmania Bond diehards in their relentless pursuit of all things Bond, assuming that’s actually a thing?
Brie Larson and Zendaya will reach New Year’s Eve 2019 and look back on a highly productive year. Both have had star-turns in superhero blockbusters (or to put it another way, blockbusters: Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home be their names) and both find their profiles considerably enlarged as a result. Things couldn’t possibly get any better, right? So you think. One award had previously eluded them though, but now, with a dew-eyed new decade knocking at the door, their careers could be transformed.
Disney have always had their fingers in a lot of filmmaking pies, but even by their standards things are manic at the moment. The acquisition of 21st Century Fox in spring of this year has led to the creation of the world’s first super-studio, whilst also throwing up interesting ramifications for the future of many beloved franchises.
Despite having barely finished its theatrical release – a lengthy one given its jaw-dropping financial success – Joker has already been pencilled in for its home viewing bow. The psychological psycho-drama starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular clown will be available for Digital and Blu-ray purchase on December 17th, well in time to get it under the tree – should you wish to traumatize your loved ones this Christmas.
As you may know (or may not, no judgement here), there’s a new streaming service fresh into the marketplace ready to compete vigorously for your time, money, attention, all of the above. Disney+ has been online for just under 3 weeks now (in certain territories, but more on that later), and the company are engaged in the process of loading more of their library onto the service sooner rather than later. All but 4 films in the MCU were available to view on launch, but I can tell you now that number will soon be 3.
Marvel fans, here's some more script news for you. Karen Gillan has confirmed that the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been completed – a striking turnaround for the project after the much-publicized turmoil that rocked it. Though I don’t want to rehash that story again (as I said, much-publicized), it should be noted given Gillan’s response, who was effusive in her praise for returning director and writer James Gunn in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
Fans of one of the most successful original horror films of recent years - 2018’s A Quiet Place – will be abuzz at the speed a sequel has entered production. Grossing over $300 million was always going to be a ticket to fast-tracking, but I have some news that’ll leave you even more abuzz than you already are (barely a paragraph in and I’ve already killed the word abuzz).
Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland could reunite on screen for anything and it would still be a punchy attention grabber for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (spelled out in its entirety for contractual reasons), as well for the more niche fandoms specifically devoted to Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr., whose nicknames we can only guess at. Hollanders has a nice ring to it, though, right?
