Catching up with series on Netflix has become a familiar hobby for people during the lockdown - I've personally been working my way through Star Trek: The Next Generation - and the platform continues to add great shows and individual seasons to keep us all busy. Just this week, Netflix dropped the current episodes of Supernatural's fifteenth and final season, as well as making the first season of Hannibal available to subscribers. These, and other series, make up a good selection of the new additions to the platform this week.
Although we advise taking it with a pinch of salt, the line-up for the MCU's take on the X-Men may have been revealed. According to some notes that apparently emerged from a Marvel meeting, and then leaked to YouTube, Kevin Feige and co. already have a plan for the mutant team and the line-up is currently as follows: Storm, Cyclops, Thunderbird, Havok, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl) and Sunfire.
Although it's looking increasingly likely that we won't see Adam Wingard's Godzilla vs. Kong until 2021, news is still coming out about the monster dust-up movie. After the MPAA announced a PG-13 rating for the film, which may disappoint some fans wanting harder content, Wingard has now spoken out about the decision, hinting that audiences will not be disappointed by the amount of kaiju action in the pic.
It's been a long road to release for Disney's live-action Mulan, which has been one of the more notable movies to have its theatrical premiere delayed due to COVID-19. Originally supposed to arrive in theaters on March 27th, Mulan was already being discussed in March as possibly having an initial release on Disney Plus. One of the key reasons at the time was the sheer amount of money Disney was losing, with much of this coming from theme park closures. Grace Randolph, who previously hinted at Disney putting Mulan out on VOD, has today reinforced that idea.
HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
While we've seen some unusual titles, and a lot of Adam Sandler movies, dominate Netflix's rankings in recent weeks, arguably one of the best comic book movies of all time is doing pretty well on the service this weekend. 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is currently the tenth most popular film on all of Netflix, something we're not too surprised about, given the quality of the movie. But what exactly makes Spider-Verse so special?
Proving yet again that Netflix audiences just can't get enough of Adam Sandler, the top two movies on the platform right now both star the performer. The list of the most popular films on Netflix US for May 28th has Uncut Gems at the top of the pile, with Just Go With It coming in at second place, ahead of other recent fare such as The Lovebirds and The Wrong Missy. What, then, might explain why Sandler continues to dominate on Netflix?
One of the most popular Netflix series of 2019, The Umbrella Academy is coming back for a second season on the streaming platform this summer. Last week, we received a promo trailer that confirmed a release date of July 31st, which has now been followed by a set of character posters for the show. Available below, they feature the seven main cast members, albeit with their faces hidden by umbrellas, with the parasol theme extending to the background and the season 2 logo.
