Though it failed to earn him an Oscar nom as many predicted it would, Black Mass still marks an impressive return to form for Johnny Depp. Based on the non-fiction novel of the same name, the film revolves around crime boss Whitey Bulger, “the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.”
Boasting one of Depp’s best performances in years as well as a supporting cast who are all up to the task of holding the screen with their leading man, Black Mass is a thrilling piece of work from Scott Cooper and a must-watch for fans of the crime genre.
