Fox will be re-releasing I, Robot on Blu-Ray 3D later this year.
In a somewhat weird announcement Fox has announced that they will be re-releasing the Will Smith sci-fi film I, Robot to Blu-Ray later this year with an all-new 3D transfer. The film is a part of a new partnership between Fox and JVC Kenwood that involves bringing older titles to 3D with proper post-conversion that costs between $50,000 and $70,000 per minute to transfer a film.
I’m kind of intrigued by this news. Surely this is going to be a spendy project for Fox, so why take such a gamble? The 3D market starting to dry up right now in theaters, which means Blu-Ray is probably going to follow. I love 3D when done properly, but I’m not sure I’d be willing to pay another $30 bucks just to re-purchase I, Robot in 3D.
I can’t fully comment until I see a demo of the film in front of my eyes though. If they’re willing to spend this kind of dough then I’m going to assume it’s going to look spectacular. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
There isn’t an official date or specs for I, Robot, but it should be coming out later this year. Stay tuned!
