David Ayer wants DC Studios and Warner to reconsider an “Ayer Cut” release for Suicide Squad. Batman: TAS fans are livid that voice acting legend Kevin Conroy was excluded from the Oscar night memorial tribute, and longtime fans are wondering if the upcoming Flash movie will have a big screen version of the Scarlet Speedster’s greatest foe.

It looks like director David Ayer is done letting sleeping Enchantresses lie. The ostensible director of Suicide Squad, one of DC’s biggest critical flops, is growing ever more vocal in concert with his fans about getting a new cut of the film released that follows his original artistic intentions. Ayer has long insisted that executive interference was why his original 2016 film, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and, perhaps most infamously, Jared Leto as the DCEU’s new Joker, ended up as the worst reviewed film of DC and Warner. Bros’ so-called “Snyderverse” movies.
According to Ayer, the studio is responsible for the outright removal of elements that gave the story cohesion including additional scenes with the much-maligned Leto. He also states that certain character arcs such as Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Cara Delevinge’s Enchantress were “eviscerated” by the interference from above.
James Gunn has been on record as stating that the so-called Snyderverse aka the DCEU is firmly a thing of the past for the studio, but that doesn’t necessarily contradict a future release of a director’s cut for Suicide Squad. Perhaps a groundswell of online support may convince him to do so once the new replacement DCU comes further into being.
Batman; the Animated Series fans (rightly) up in arms about Kevin Conroy’s omission from the Oscar’s In Memoriam tribute
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is receiving even more flak than usual after Sunday’s broadcast, following a stunning number of significant omissions from the ceremony’s annual In Memoriam segment including Paul Sorvino, Anne Heche, and Triangle of Sadness actor Charlbi Dean. But DC fans in particular are up in arms about the omission of Kevin Conroy, the actor that has voiced the Dark Knight in animated projects since his debut as the character in 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series.
Conroy was often held up as the greatest Batman actor of all time and while he voiced the character primarily in television projects outside the Academy’s purview, he did voice the character in the theatrically released Batman: Mask of the Phantasm in 1993. Conroy also appeared in 1992’s Chain of Desire as well as several big screen projects by director Kevin Smith.
The omission caused many fans to take to their social media and pay the actor the respects they wished the Academy had. And while the Academy may have done him a disservice, they can take comfort in the many moving tributes that were paid to him following his passing in November.
Will The Flash actually feature the speedster’s deadliest rogue?
It’s safe to say that anyone who has been paying attention to the last few trailers for The Flash realizes this isn’t your standard superhero origin film. The movie is far from a solo adventure either, combining Ezra Miller’s Flash with two Batmen, Superwoman, and even another (at least) Flash played by Ezra Miller. And it’s the last bit of casting that longtime fans of the character as well as fans of the original comic book source material, the Flashpoint storyline are worried about.
In the original comics, the inciting character was one of the most intimidating members of Flash’s so-called “Rogues Gallery,” Eobard Thawne aka Professor Zoom aka the Reverse-Flash. Thawne has plagued The Flash over the course of his career, even murdering Barry Allen’s wife Iris West at one point and attempting in Flashpoint to erase The Flash out of existence. And many fans are getting worried we won’t be seeing him in the new movie.
Given that the trailers seem to indicate that Barry himself has altered the timeline and no one playing Thawne is credited in the film yet, many fans are halfheartedly hoping we will at least get a glimpse of the character (or even a mention) in a post-credits sequence. With the movie’s big bad expected to be Superman’s foe General Zod, fans of the yellow-suited nemesis may have to wait for another project to see the villain on-screen. Or watch the CW.
